Art, comics, graphic design and web development by the artist: Matthew Taylor
Animated gifs have a lot of good qualities that make them very versatile; their file size can be kept low, the image will stay sharp even when it's compressed, and they also have an optional transparency that allows background elements to show through. On the web, these qualities are put to great use in a variety of different ways.
The most common use of animated gifs on the internet is in banner advertising. Here, by cycling through a few simple frames and displaying messages or pictures, a standard image is transformed into a virtual animated billboard.
Most of the time when I'm building animated gifs it's for advertising purposes but that doesn't mean that they can't be creative. Gifs can be so much more than banner ads; you just have to think outside the square. Gif animation is a legitimate art form just like everything else; it just takes a bit of confidence and creativity to take it to a better place.

'Color is crucial in painting, but it is very hard to talk about. There is almost nothing you can say that holds up as a generalization, because it depends on too many factors: size, modulation, the rest of the field, a certain consistency that color has with forms, and the statement you're trying to make.' - Roy Lichtenstein
